I use Space Buttons for birthday greetings on Myspace, since Myspace lets me know a few days ahead of time that one of my friends is having a birthday. So I find a fitting photograph, and load in into my favorite graphics processor, and I add the text for my URL:
http://productinaweekend.com
and a comment like Happy Birthday - Glad you are my friend.
I upload that photo to my server using an FTP program and then I fired up Space Buttons. First, I input a greeting, like Happy Birthday Bubba, and I click next. The next section has a place for a comment, and I write something from the heart, or a joke, depending on how well I know the person.
Then next thing Space Buttons asks me for is a link for the picture. I am promoting all kinds of websites, so if I have a particular website that is related to one of this friend's interests (like Rhonda is a realtor, so I would place a link to http://beginrealestateinvesting.com as the link for the picture). Each case will be different for each friend, because you don't want you comments to be spammy.
Next you put the full url to your picture: http://spacebuttons.net/bluerock.jpg and click next. For the closing comment, I usually have a signature phrase I use "Have an amazing day!" but you can use whatever fits your personality. You can even use a signature file from one of the programs you are promoting like this one from List Bandit:
Feeling Lucky? If So, You Could Hit The List-Building Jackpot
Reaching A List Of Over 20,000 Prospects Tomorrow... For Free!

Then you enter your name in the next field. If you have your own domain, you can enter the HTML for a textlink to your domain as your name:
<a href=michealsavoie.com/welcome>Micheal Savoie</a>
Then when you click next, you are given another place to enter a URL. Choose another related website you think your friend would be interested in, maybe even a program you are an affiliate of.
Click next and you are given the text that you want to anchor to your URL. Anchored text links are very powerful - although on Myspace, the cloaking that Myspace places over the links in the comments is much less Search Engine friendly, it still helps brand the link in the minds of your readers, so choose a phrase that might develop curiosity.
If your friend is popular, many people will see your comment, and you will get traffic from the comments you place using Space Buttons. I recommend you post 3 comments per day (make sure you only use Space Buttons on HTML enabled profiles, or your comments will look horrible) for maximum effect. You will find your profile will get more visits, and your links will as well. I found myself getting many more friend requests once I started posting comments. People love to have friends who are popular and you will look popular when you post comments on a lot of your friends' profiles!
